The cottage can trace its roots back to the 16th & 17th centuries but there are two curved oak beams which were erected in 1463. As you wander inside the cottage you will find that little has changed and not just the original open hearth fireplace, which is still in location in the living room, but paneling as well. All the rooms within are decorated with furnishings from the period and including the four poster Hathaway Bed.

Lunt Roman Fort – Obviously much older than Warwick Castle, as its name suggests this was a Roman Army fort. After painstaking research the site now features a faithful reconstruction of the original fort. As you wander around this wonderful attraction one can get a feel for what life was like in the Roman army when in Britain. The museum itself houses many finds from the archaeological dig along with a model of what the fort would have looked like in 64AD.

Pitlochry Attractions: Things To Do When You Visit Pitlochry

Another thing for which the town of Pitlochry is famous for is its highland games and it hosted the first modern highland games in 1852. The games are still played today and each year they are the last ones to be held in Scotland. The games take place very close to Pitlochry's main street and in 2008 they will took place on the 13th September. 

The games include all the traditional ones you would expect at such an event but newer games have also been introduced. These inclode a tug of war, highland dancing and pipe band competitions also. So there is lots to keep you occupied during the day's events.

This attraction is located in the town of Summerbridge and is only a short distance from Harrogate. Travelling The World - The New Forest In England

If you every come to the South Of England on a vacation then you simply must not miss a trip to the New Forest , the newest national park in the UK and One of the Worlds Heritage national park sites.

The idea for national parks first started in the United States and one of the first world national parks was Yosemite of course.

Since that time many other countries have adopted this way of protecting and preserving the un-spoilt habitats of the world for future generations and for the preservation of endangered species as well.

The New Forest has a few endangered species itself but nothing like the American bald eagle that is now increasing in numbers due thankfully. The forest is home to a wide variety of species from bats to toads, the deer and the free roaming New Forest ponies.

Centuries and centuries ago the New Forest was to all intents and purposes open land but then one of the kings on of the day decided to make it a royal forest only to be used for the royal pursuit of hunting, and local folk who had lived off the land for centuries found themselves unable to hunt the land for food to feed their family, penalties for contravening the law were severe and in later time fatal.

Fortunately over time sanity prevailed and today you will find many animals wandering the forest grazing as the local "commoners" exercise their right to graze their live stock on the common ground.

The New Forest is home to some very ancient and historic woodland which has been said to be some of the oldest in the entire country. One of the Forest oaks is over 4 centuries old which is remarkable by European standards.

The natural beauty of the forest is the reason many people come here but if you like a more strenuous break then there are plenty of other activities to choose from, which include kayaking , pony trekking on and off road cycling and of course the delightful forest walks to name but a few.

Only a short drive away you can find some simply outstanding and very clean beaches. Sheffield: What To Do When You Visit Sheffield

The city of Sheffield is a very metropolitan place which for years has been one of the homes of steel. 1.    Beauchief Abbey – This is one of the most beautiful of all attractions that Sheffield has to offer. When originally built this was the only Premonstratensian Abbey to be found in the West Ridings of Yorkshire. Today you can spend time just wandering around this peaceful medieval site and letting any modern day stress simply melt away.

2.    Beauchief Golf Course – Surrounding the abbey mentioned above is one of three public golf courses. This pay and play course like the other two is close to the city center and a round of golf here will keep you occupied for hours. The course is quite challenging but you'll be compensated by spectacular scenery to boot.

3.    Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet – As we know Sheffield is famous for its steel and this is an authentic 18th Century scythe works. You're able to visit the house, the scythe workshops, a crucible steel furnace, the dam {and|&} water wheels which were all important for steel production a couple hundred years ago. It provides you with a chance to get a feel for what life was like for those who worked in such jobs.

4.    Botanical Gardens – For those who are wanting to find some peace and tranquility when visiting this city then is a place worth visiting. English Heritage have classed this a Grade II site and with several listed buildings which include the glass pavilions. As you wander through these gardens you will see that much restoration work is being undertaken. This restoration is designed to enhance the original Victorian garden design and introduce back into it plants originally grown when the gardens were first laid. There are plenty of jobs available translating, teaching English and working for companies that require English speakers. For instance, the British Automobile Association has a large call-centre based in Lyon. Lyon also happens to be the home for English-speaking organisations such as Interpol and Euronews.  You'll find similar jobs available in the other large cities, especially Paris. So you can almost definitely get a job in big cities, although you would normally expect to have a job of a lower status and salary than in your own country.

However, most of us looking to move to France don't want to move to big cities. That's the sort of lifestyle we are trying to escape. We want to live a gentler lifestyle in some secluded rural part of France. What are our job prospects there?

The first thing to say is that the reason that these parts of France are so quiet and rural is that there is very little industry or commerce. Such regions depend mainly on agriculture (and the famous EU subsidies.) The main reason that these areas are so quiet is because young French people don't want to (or are not able to) live there because of a lack of employment opportunities.

So how can you find a job where the local young French population cannot? The main asset that you have that they don't have is that you speak good English. As long as you also speak passable French, you may be able to get a job in the tourism industry, perhaps as a guide or as a waiter/waitress. Or you could get a job helping new English people who want to buy property in France. One possibility is to work for an estate agent, though this is a heavily regulated industry where you may be required to obtain qualifications. If you have building skills, many English-speaking people moving into the area (Dutch and German as well as British and Irish) will choose you over French speaking artisan. However the path chosen by many people is to run a gite - a self-catering cottage. This can be a good source of income and we'll look more at this next time.

Lyon a city that remains unknown

France is a great place to have a vacation. The food is great, the wine is superb and there is lots to see and do. Even the rude waiters provide something different to what you find at home. Everybody knows that Paris a great place to spend part of your vacation but where else in France should you go?

How about spending a couple of days in the city the French themselves think is the capital for food? How about staying on the edge of two different wine regions, with a chance to make comparisons between the two at amazing prices? How about being in an ancient Roman city with its own theater and with fabulous mosaics? How about wandering down narrow passages between houses, designed originally to get the bales of silk down to the river protected from the climate? You can reach Lyon easily from Paris by the world-famous fast train, the TGV. You can travel across a major part of France in just two hours, in great comfort. In fact, some Parisians take their business colleagues down to Lyon by train just to have lunch. Lyon is considered teh gastronomic center of France with the highest concntration of Michelin three star restaurants in the world. Many of the young cooks at these great restaurants leave to open their own restaurants, serving great food at modest prices. You are sure to find exceptional food at reasonable prices in Lyon.

I don't know why Lyon is not included in more vacation plans. It's a great city for tourists and a perfect stop on your vacation trip on the way from Paris to the sophisticated beach life of the South of France. For your next vacation in France, spend a few days in Lyon.

Nottingham Vacations: Things To See And Do When You Stay in Nottingham

. Over the centuries it has been home to many different races and cultures. In the time of the Anglo Saxons it was home of a Saxon chieftain named Snot and was dubbed Snotingaham. Later, in the 9th century, the town was home to the Vikings and it became one of five fortified towns that they held. 

Although the city was renowned for producing wonderful lace, during the 15th Century the town become famous for the religious sculptures made from alabaster that were exported. Then during the industrial revolution the town was once again a major textile producer. Nottingham remained famous for this trade until the end of the second world war, when cheaper imports became more widely available. More recently, a lot of the buildings used for producing textiles have been restored and put to other uses.

2.    The Galleries Of Justice – On this historic site you can learn about 300 years of crime and punishment that occurred in the city. Found in the centre of the Lace Market which is located in the very centre of the city. It was used from the 1780's right up until the 1980's as not just the courts but a prison as well. One of the "displays" is an actual reconstruction of a Victorian trial and witness the prisoner being sentenced and then taken down to the cells. You also have a chance to explore the medieval caves below the courts and cells as well.

3.    Wollaton Hall and Park – Just a short trip from the city, you'll find this historic building and its grounds. Tracing its roots back to the time of Queen Elizabeth I this was the brainchild of Robert Smythson and was finally completed in 1588. You can look around the house and the museum of Natural History you can gently wander around the surrounding 500 acres of parkland. You can also explore the fascinating Tudor kitchens in the hall.

Make Your Own Way From London To Oxford

One of the great secrets of travel is to 'do what the locals do'. Local people will almost always know the best things to do and the cheapest way to do them.

Take the case of the 'tourist bus'. It can be very convenient to get to know a foreign city quickly, using the local open-top bus. It can make an excellent introduction to a city and allow you to narrow down the list of places that you want to explore in more detail. However, you don't see many Londoners on the open-top buses in London, do you? Even if they are showing visitors around their beloved city. Why? Because there are much cheaper and more effective ways of getting around the city. A day pass on the London buses is cheap and you will see at least as much, if you plan it carefully. And you won't have that annoying, patronizing commentary.

So how about traveling to places outside London? This can seem more complicated to arrange and many people seek the safety of an organized tour. But think about Oxford, for example. This beautiful historic university city is only an hour or so from London. There is an adequate train service. But what do the locals do? They take the bus. In fact, there are two bus companies operating on the London to Oxford route in competition, which means that the fares are cheap and the service is frequent. For less than twenty pounds, you can get a return ticket on one of these services to Oxford. Go when you want, explore Oxford at your own pace and return to London when you want. This is what a Londoner would do and I'd advise you as an informed visitor to London to do the same.

So where do you find these buses? There is a convenient bus stop situated at Marble Arch, on the Hyde Park side. Look out for a service named the 'Oxford Tube' (as you probably know, the 'tube' is the popular name for the subway system in London.) Just pay the driver as you get on the bus. Take my advice and go upstairs. You'll enjoy interesting views of the western London suburbs and see how Londoners really live. And once you cross the outer London ring road, you'll love the views of the green and rolling Oxfordshire countryside. Remember to bring your camera!

Eastbourne is a town in East Sussex, on the southern coast of England. The British have been taking vacations in Eastbourne for many years. However, it was when the railway finally reached the town during the Edwardian period that the town's popularity as a vacation spot really took off. 

However, when visiting the town one you're not restricted to just the town's many facilities. Located close by are Brighton & Hove and Hastings. Also from here, you're well placed to explore Beachy Head Cliff or watch the wildlife on the South Downs.

Of course, you're not restricted to building sandcastles on the beaches, the town has four theatres, several parks, museums and a bandstand. Which means there's plenty of things to do during your time in the town. There is plenty of local transport to get you around or you can take a stroll through the streets if you prefer. 

Beachy Head is top of the list for many visitors to the town. This is situated to the West of the town and and towers over the sea, reaching 530 feet at it's peak. When you get to the top, you'll find some great views in all directions and when the weather is on your side, you will be able to see the Kent coastline at Dungeness. 

If you want to explore outside the town, Abbots Wood is well worth a look. This historic woodland is one of the best that you will find in the country. The peaceful setting will allow you to unwind and enjoy being at one with nature. The woodlands are home to many different wildlife species and lots of different species of trees and other plants.

During the summer months, you may decide to take a boat trip from the harbor. The tours take about an hour and you'll get some great photo opportunities of both Beachy Head and the local coast. The trip generally starts from the town's port and will head out to Beachy Head peninsular before heading back in to land once more.

Grand Ole Opry, Music City's Most Popular Draw

From its modest origins, the Grand Ole Opry has become a symbol of America, and anyone thinking about a Nashville vacation knows, the Grand Old Opry is Nashville’s premier drawing card. It began as a live music radio show in 1925, and just continued active and going. And in modern times it has survived to be the oldest continuous radio program in America. It is also broadcast on XM Radio, and is televised Saturday nights on the Great American Country cable channel.

The Grand Ole Opry began just five years after commercial radio programming was started in N. America. In 1925, a radio station was established in Music City by an insurance company (National Life and Accident) trusting that this fresh programming medium could be used to publicize insurance policies. Country music fans are familiar with the station's call letters, WSM, but most don't realize that WSM stood for the company's slogan: "We Shield Millions."

National Life engaged one of the country's most popular radio personality, George D. Hay, as WSM's program manager. On November 28, 1925, the 30 year old Hay identified himself "The Solemn Old Judge" and set up the show that would soon be identified as the WSM Barn Dance.

George D. Hay's weekly Barn Dance programs came to be enormously popular, and in 1927 he renamed it the Grand Ole Opry. Hordes of fans overfilled the studio as they arrived to see & hear the stars, so National Life constructed a bigger auditorium with a capacity of 500.  In 1932, WSM upgraded their broadcast power to 50,000 watts and most of North America could hear the Opry on Saturday evenings.

The fans kept growing, so in 1934 the Opry moved outside its station studio to the Hillsboro Theater (now named the Belcourt). The fans kept increasing, so next the Opry moved to the Dixie Tabernacle in East Nashville, then to the War Memorial Auditorium next to the State Capitol.

In 1943, still requiring more room, the Opry moved to the Ryman Auditorium, where it stayed until 1974, when it moved to its contemporary home base, the 4,400 seat Grand Ole Opry House, neighbor to the Opryland Hotel, where you can see shows several times each week, except for several weeks in winter when the Opry travels back to the Ryman Auditorium.

On the main stage of the new Opry House, there's a six-foot circle of dark colored, oak floor; it's shiny but perceptibly worn. Severed from the stage of the Opry's famed latter home, the Ryman Auditorium, this circle of oak gives freshman fans and old hands alike the opportunity to play on the one and the same spot that formerly supported Patsy Cline, Ernest Tubb, Uncle Dave Macon, and others.

There have been lots of changes at the Opry over the years - its members, its music, and its home. But that dark oak circle stays, a reminder for every musician who stands inside that they are part of something that's much larger than themselves, and wherever they may go they are connected to the champions who came before.

The Opry’s artists and music have defined C&W in the USA. Hundreds of musicians have played as members over the years. Being rewarded with membership in the Grand Ole Opry, country’s most longstanding “Hall of Fame”, is to be selected as one of the most elite artists of country music.

Membership in the Opry is not just attained, but must be maintained with regular performances during the artist's career.

Nowadays you can experience the Grand Ole Opry in to a greater extent than any time before. There are Tuesday Night Opry shows from April through December. A two-hour radio program, can be picked up in 200 cities across America. Just like country stars of old  grew up adjusting their radio to hear the Opry, future day generations of Opry stars can hear it on satellite radio or the internet.

Wherever they're hearing, those rising Opry stars some day will claim their place standing on that noted circular piece of oak.

During 1935, the actor Will Hay was to be found staying in the town whilst the comedy film "Windbag the Sailor" was being produced. Later, the town saw Sir John Mills star during the filming of Scott of the Antarctic. Additionally, the town has been used as a backdrop for the Disney film Treasure Island that was made in 1950.

Gloucester Vacations: Things To See And Do When You Stay in Gloucester

The historic city of Gloucester sits on

Although historically the city has been a port, the actual  dockyard area fell into disrepair and then in the 1980's the city
decided to renovate this area. There are plenty of riverside open spaces to wander around or spend time doing a little bit of shopping. And, as you'd expect, there are also plenty of bars for you to relax with a quiet drink and maybe some food. One of the warehouses that are situated in this part of the city is also home to the National Waterways Museum. If you're interested in military history, then make sure to check the Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum in Custom House. 

A visit to the city wouldn't be complete without seeing Gloucester Cathedral. This building has been a place of worship for more than thirteen hundred years. If you take the time to expore inside, you'll be able to see its detailed architectural features and the cloisters are generally thought to be some of the most beautiful in present day England. If you get a sense of deja-vu, you recognize this building from somewhere then you do as the cathedral has been used as a location for the Harry Potter movies.

Gloucester also has a large, central tranquil park. This can be found just a short stroll from the city center and was probably the first park to be developed. The park has lots of space to keep your children occupied and you to enjoy a picnic on a summers afternoon. There are many events which take place here during the summer months. A quick visit to the Park's Information Office which is located in a cottage that dates back to Tudor times and will keep you informed about all the current events.

Another place that you'll almost certainly want to see when you come to Gloucester is Blackfriars. This Dominican Priory is the oldest one in England.  Although the friary itself was dissolved back in 1538, Thomas Bell bought the buildings for himself. He had part of the monastery converted into a home and the rest of the property into a factory where his cloth could be made. At certain times of the year English Heritage now offer guided tours around the property.

Holidays In The Peak District - Ashbourne

Whilst visiting the peak district area, if you pass the sign for Ashbourne, turn the car around and go and visit this beautiful town. The place is one of the finest old market town's around the area, though it must be said, there are still a lot of other beautiful places around the peak district.

If you are basing your Peak District holidays here, then there is a delightful array of comfortable Peak District holiday cottages for you to choose from , but many get booked well in advance so book early to get the best choice. Also as would be expected the area has a number of luxury hotels if you prefer the more pampered style of holiday.

The town, dating back to the Georgian period, was a highly fashionable and busy place for the wealthy all those centuries ago. Whilst walking around and looking at the buildings, which are truly magnificent, you can imagine, long ago, all the ladies walking around in all their beautiful finery.

With mellow town houses, and resplendent coaching inns, there is a truly unique atmosphere about this small town. Taking a stroll along the main street, you will come across historic alms houses and the 16th century old Grammar School. On a beautiful day, you can also take a walk along the Heritage Trail which takes you around the town.

Being a fair trade town means fair trade products are available in the restaurants, cafes, and shops, and there is still the local market which takes place on Thursdays and Saturdays throughout the year with tradition going as far back to 1257.

Ashbourne has a wide variety of quality accomodation if you need somewhere to stay. In the central area of Ashbourne, there is the Beresford Arms Hotel, which offers accommodation and breakfasts. It all depends on the individual couple, or families as to what type of accommodation they require.

Outside of the town, there are farms to stay at, or privately run guest houses; some dating back to the 19th century. What ever the choice, there will always be something to suit everyone, whilst exploring this lovely town and the area around.

It must be remembered while visiting or holidaying in or around Ashbourne, right on the door step is the beautiful Peak District which offers something for everyone. For the avid walker, there are some truly amazing and beautiful walkways.

It is always good to have good rambling boots, which are also great for climbing. Walking and climbing are available provided local knowledge and advice has been found.

There are also numerous caves in the area, so if you are felling really adventurous ask about pot holing. There are many, many things on offer around this beautiful area, so it is well worth having a camera at the ready for snapshots of the scenic views and any animals you may come across.

Perth Attractions: What To See and Do When You Visit Perth

Although they share name, make sure that you don't confuse Perth in Scotland with its counterpart in Australia. It sits on the bank of the River Tay and and is regularly referred to as "The Fair City". Without doubt, you'll find a wide range of attractions, which will keep all people  amused no matter what their age.

1.  Huntingtower Castle – Is located close to Perth and as well as being unusual, it is the most well preserved castle in this area. The building itself was built in 3 separate phases and these took place between the 15th and 16th centuries. The castle is noted for its 15th century keep, the 16th Century L Plan Tower House and a small building range connecting to the Tower House.

The church is low and broad with an octagonal tower giving grace to the beautiful spire.

There used to be in the centre of Bakewell the White Horse Inn, which has been replaced by The Rutland Arms Hotel, with some other various buildings being demolished in 1805, to form Rutland Square.

Centuries ago, these would of catered for coach travellers who passed through the town, and it has always been reputed for the connection to Jane Austin, who was reported to have stayed at this hotel, whilst writing Pride and Prejudice, and that Lambton in the book has been identified as Bakewell.

Another truly great invention happened by accident at the hotel, and that is the famous Bakewell pudding known throughout all of the UK. The story is told, that when the cook misinterpreted the baking instructions, and pored the egg mixture over the jam instead of adding to the pastry what should have been a tart had now become a pudding.

Glass - Old or New? Here's a Few Clues!

In 1963 while traveling in Jamaica, I found what was believed to be an authentic Greenhow Williamsburg 1770 sealed old glass bottle.  I actually agonized over the purchase for $30.00.  In 1972 while visiting Williamsburg, I discovered that whole antique glass bottles like this had never been found!  My bottle was presented and alas the curator, Noel Hume, stated that it was not old but rather a 1930s Williamsburg reproduction.  The good news was that at that time it was worth $60.  The color of the bottle was good.  The methods used to produce the bottle were right on.  It had an applied seal.  There was a broken pontil (a rough spot on the bottom where the glass blower broke the pipe away from the object) and the mold marks were polished when it was taken out of the mold.  But, the curator stated that the give away was that it just looked too good.  The bottle would most likely have been used and show wear from use or worse mis-treatment.

This is one of the clues for distinguishing old glass, antique glass from new.  Check the bottom of a piece to see if there are scratches.  Expect to see wear where it makes sense.  The bottom of a bottle would show scratches where it was slid over tabletops.  These marks should not be uniform but rather random in depth, direction, width and length.  Parallel lines or concentric circles would be suspect.  Sandpaper can be used to simulate wear marks.

Reproductions are often made from original molds and museums often offer reproductions for sale.  Checking museum catalogs is a good way to see what is currently being offered and thus not old.  Reproductions from such sources may be marked or tagged but the mark may be with an easily removed paper label and the tag may have been discarded.  And, don’t forget to check out places like Cracker Barrel to see what is new.  You will often see colors in new glass offerings that you will never see in older glass.
