Holidays in Pitlochry are getting more popular not only with holidayers from the UK but also from across the globe. Certainly as Pitlochry holidays go there is plenty for one to do and see including taking in the spectacular scenery that's found in this part of the country.
The town of Pitlochry itself has kept almost all of its Victorian charm and features and it can be found in the highlands of Perthshire. Actually, the town has been a popular holiday resort for more than 100 years now and part of the reason for its popularity is that Queen Victoria stayed here in 1844.
Although Queen Victoria's visit increased the town's popularity, Pitlochry was well known before this time. During the 18th Century, it was here that flax was being grown and the town was producing high quality linen in their mills. This meant that the town was very busy throughout the 1700's and 1800's.
As well as weaving linen, the city was renowned for its whisky that was being distilled at the Blair Atholl Whisky Distillery. Then in 1835, the first water powered wool mills were opened by the local MacNaughtons and here raw wool was made into Tweed.
Another thing for which the town of Pitlochry is famous for is its highland games and it hosted the first modern highland games in 1852. The games are still played today and each year they are the last ones to be held in Scotland. The games take place very close to Pitlochry's main street and in 2008 they will took place on the 13th September.
The games include all the traditional ones you would expect at such an event but newer games have also been introduced. These inclode a tug of war, highland dancing and pipe band competitions also. So there is lots to keep you occupied during the day's events.
As well as arranging your trip to Pitlochry in order to take in the highland games there are lots of other things to see and do when you visit. Along with these games, there are regular festivals such as the town's Autumn Festival and the Winter Words one as well.
So you do not have to restrict your Pitlochry holidays solely to summer months just in the warmer season. Providing you're prepared to dress up warm and something to protect you from the rain then you can visit this part of Scotland at any time of the year. In fact, you may find a much more warm welcome when you visit the area during the cold dark winter months even more than you would expect to find in the summer.
