Alicante - An Ideal Touring Base

Because it is a gateway into the Costa Blanca, Alicante is a perfect centre for touring. Containing a delightful mixture of ancient and modern day traditions and culture, Alicante is found within the popular tourist area of the Costa Blanca. Visitors to Alicante will enjoy warm sunny climate, some of the best beaches Spain has to offer as well as the most remarkable of Moorish architecture.

Found on the Spanish coastline between the resorts of Benidorm and Elche, The city sits in the shadow of its mountain-topped castle. The city and the surrounding areas are scattered with churches with the most photographed of all of them being the Iglesia de Santa Maria. This is the oldest church in the city and was built between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries with the church formerly being a mosque. The Cathedral of Saint Nicholas was constructed in the 17th century in honour of Alicante's patron saint and is therefore one of the most important buildings in this area.

Alicante has a good number of monuments to please historians and sightseers and can be found all around the area with columns and statues adding interest to many a formerly boring location. Providing a sharp eye over Alicante Bay, the Castillo de Santa Barbara is said to be one of the biggest medieval fortresses in Europe. Readily reached by road or by elevator (lift) from the Paseo Maritimo, the castle has unbeatable vistas of the picturesque surrounding region. In addition to the excitement the Castillo offers to visitors, Alicante offers more architectural treasures including the nineteenth century bullring and the Provincial Gallery (formerly the Gavina Palace). All of the Alicante attractions are readily reached using an Alicante Airport hire car. Booking your car hire online will normally produce big savings as well as ensuring that your requested vehicle is definitely when you arrive at the airport.

Alicante is the perfect venue to come to enjoy your self and the main reason holidaymakers come back each year. With such a huge range of accomodation on offer, there are plenty of discounted Alicante hotels to suit all tastes and pockets. The beaches here have the most golden sand and offer a variety of both easy to get to as well as hidden bays perfect for private sunbathing. Head over to Albufereta Beach where there is excellent range of water sports. It is a peaceful place that is generally undiscovered by the majority of tourists.

The Playa del Postiguet offers the ideal location for an evening stroll. You will join local inhabitants along this attractive seaside walk - it's a perfect location for bringing the day to a close. Once the Port of Madrid, Alicante Harbour combines fishing and sailing and is the perfect venue to come for the best fish restaurants in town. The harbour offers a good source of activity night and day. This is where visitors come to eat incredibly fresh, delicious seafood, learn sailing and finish the day off with a spot of clubbing into the small hours.

Nobody likes to party as much as the locals and visitors of Alicante! Here you will find a celebration of one type or another happening much of the time, no matter what time of the year you want to visit. One of the more serious of Costa Blanca festivals is the Easter Procession. Adorned in black and carrying lighted candles, a model of Jesus is carried on a cross around the streets. Each November, in remembrance of the Patron Saint Crist del Bon Encert, each town has an individual fiesta. Don't be surprised to find that shops are closed all day, every day as everything stops for this amazing event of dancing, singing and firework displays. On a lighter note, one of the most well known local fiestas is that of the International Puppet Festival.
